Met office fears more shocks next week

ISLAMABAD : Director General, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Qamar‑uz‑Zaman Chaudhry has indicated high probability of more aftershocks in Balochistan during next week following an earthquake of 6.2 intensity on Ritcher scale that jolted Quetta early Wednesday morning.

He said the epicenter of this earthquake was 60 kilometres away from Quetta towards North and North‑East, he said while talking to Dawn News.

A small village Chenali, which is about 25 kilometres from Ziarat and Pasheen is feared to be severely affected by this earthquake, he said.

The foreshock jolted the area at 4:33 am and its magnitude was 5 on the Ritcher scale. After that, the continuous aftershocks of moderate intensity were recorded in the area.

The centre of earthquake was just about 10 kilometres inside the earth. Such earthquakes are categorized as shallow earthquakes and these are very destructive, he informed.

The magnitude of this earthquake was 6.2 but its shallowness has made it very destructive, he observed. The frequency of forthcoming shocks is expected to be high for the aftershocks.

The frequency will decrease gradually during next two weeks but the possibility of earthquake might remain there for a month.
